72-year-old goes from dyslexia to proficient reader

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., October 19, 2016 – One-on-one brain training company LearningRx has announced the winner of its national Student of the Month contest.

Wayne Kolstad, a 72-year-old woodworker and artist, came to LearningRx with an impaired ability to read, remember and stay focused due to a childhood traumatic brain injury. He spent much of his life struggling with various cognitive weaknesses but called LearningRx after seeing a TV segment featuring retired NFL player Ben Utecht going through the personal brain training program.

An initial cognitive assessment confirmed that Wayne’s brain skills were at the bottom of the measurement scales, but working one on one with a brain trainer three days a week for six months created huge gains.

“Wayne works probably four to five times as hard as any other student we have here,” says Wayne’s brain trainer, Brock Heinrich. “Now he can work more intensely. He can sustain focus on something that’s challenging for longer periods of time, and he is literally changing how his brain understands sound and words so that’s he’s able to read at a level that he’s never been able to in his life.”

LearningRx Vice President of Research & Development Tanya Mitchell says the company chose Wayne as the Student of the Month because of his massive gains in so many different cognitive skills. “He’s put in the work to change his brain,” says Mitchell. “Wayne is proof that if you want to improve your quality of life at any age you can. He’s truly an inspiration to students of all ages.”

Each month, LearningRx choosing a Student of the Month from its more than 80 centers across the United States. Highlights of the winner’s improvements from personal brain training are showcased in a video that’s uploaded to http://StudentShoutouts.com.
